UNDERSTANDING THE LTL MARKET

Within the LTL market there are two distinct segments.

Long-haul LTL: Long-haul LTL carriers operate a hub-and-spoke network with an average length of haul of 1,200 to 1,400 miles and most shipments completed in three or more days. Growth is dependent on accelerated economic activity and competitor failures.

Regional LTL: Regional LTL is characterized by carriers that operate a shorter-run hub-and-spoke network with an average length of haul of 200 to 600 miles and most shipments completed in one to two days.

There are hundreds of LTL carriers throughout North America. Many are small, family-owned companies that serve a particular region or city. There are also several large national carriers that offer service throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and to offshore destinations.

The formation of FedEx National LTL, formerly Watkins Motor Lines, enables FedEx to meet customer demand for a complete LTL solution and create new opportunities for growth.
